Sol Johnson

Children’s Program Paralegal

Sol has been at NMILC since August 2022 and has worked on several teams since then. Sol is currently a paralegal for the Children’s Team where she helps youth acquire Special Immigrant Juvenile Status.

In May 2021, she graduated summa cum laude with a double major in Women and International Development and Public Policy with a minor in Three-Dimensional Art. During her schooling, she was involved in several community projects that strived to empower those in the community, and she found that immigration is where all her passions intersected. As a result, she began to focus on immigration specifically and interned at a local immigration nonprofit. During her time there, she would spend several hours a week taking calls from immigrants who had been detained and helped with asylum applications. As a result of her work there, she began to research more about detention centers. This led her to writing a paper about how abuse differs by gender in ICE detention centers. Shortly after graduation, she received the Research and Creative Work Award from the Abigail Quigley McCarthy Center for Women for advancing research and scholarship on women, gender, and issues relevant to diverse women’s concerns.

After graduation, Sol worked as a domestic violence advocate that focused on empowering the Latine community. After a year there collaborating with NMILC, she began working at NMILC. Being surrounded by family and friends who are immigrants, she is proud to uplift and advocate for her community. She continues to do so through facilitating advocacy-based art projects in her free time as well. Sol hopes to work towards a world that is more equitable and celebrates all our identities.
