Know Your Rights: Individuals

The law allows the federal government to detain and deport certain immigrants, such as people who do not have any lawful immigration status and people who do have lawful status (such as lawful permanent residents) but are now deportable due to certain criminal convictions. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a sub-agency within the Department of Homeland Security, is the agency tasked with arresting people for civil immigration violations throughout the United States. For people who live within 100-miles of the US border, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) may also detain immigrants.
